50 ROOFING CANADA FALL/WINTER 2018 PROVINCIAL ASSOCIATION UPDATES Ontario Industrial Roofing Contractors Association I n January, OIRCA hosted a very successful Annual General Meeting “Day” at the historic Old Mill in Toronto. The day began with two morning business sessions covering Active Member Performance Audits and Bylaw Revisions, followed by an awards luncheon honouring the latest recipient of the OIRCA Award of Merit. This award is presented annually to an individual from a member company that has made a significant contribution to the association or the greater roofing industry in the province. The 2018 honour was posthumously awarded to Frank Baxter, the former owner of Semple Gooder Roofing Corporation of Toronto. Baxter was a strong voice for roofing, helping to shape the roofing business we enjoy today. The OIRCA Rooftop Rescue Foundation has taken on two projects in 2018: one for Covenant House Toronto, which took place in mid-August, and the other for the House of Friendship in Cambridge scheduled for late fall. Atlas-Apex Roofing of Toronto provided the labour for Covenant House while Beacon Roofing Supply donated the materials. La matinée a commencé par deux ateliers sur les vérifications de rendement des membres actifs et les révisions des règlements, suivis d’un dîner de remise des prix en l’honneur du dernier lauréat du Prix du mérite de l’OIRCA. Ce prix est remis chaque année à une personne qui a apporté une contribution importante à l’association ou à l’ensemble de l’industrie de la toiture dans la province. La distinction 2018 a été décernée à titre posthume à Frank Baxter, ex-propriétaire de Semple Gooder Roofing Corporation de Toronto. Baxter était un porte-parole influent des maîtres couvreurs, qui nous aide à façonner le secteur des couvertures dont nous profitons aujourd’hui. Most notably, the association is currently without a president as its former president moved on and no longer works in the roofing industry. As a result, SRCA’s vice president, Vernon Hunt of Flynn Canada in Saskatoon, is covering the role until the group’s next AGM in 2019. The current board is made up of Honorary Secretary George Thorburn of Convoy Supply, Regina; Honorary Treasurer Brad Duncan of Duncan Roofing Ltd, Moose Jaw; and Past President John MacGregor of Haid Roofing Ltd, Saskatoon. Additional Directors include Dennis Burnie of Atlas-Apex (Sask) Inc; Lindsay Pochynuk of Clark Roofing (1964) Ltd, Saskatoon; Jason Baptist of Century Roofing & Sheet Metal Ltd, Saska- toon; Jordan Magnuson of Thorpe Roofing, Saskatoon; James Waldbillig of Wallace Construction Specialties, Saskatoon; and Sharon Thom, SRCA Executive Director. In other news, SRCA gave away a $1,000 scholarship in 2017, and its apprenticeship training recently started up again, with its first students participating in the training this past spring. www.srca.ca L a SRCA a tenu son assemblée générale annuelle en février.
