Un grand nombre de matériaux peuvent être utilisés comme panneaux de garnissage et chacun d’entre eux a ses propres caractéristiques de performance. Malheureuse- ment, il n’existe actuellement aucun ensemble défini de critères pour les panneaux de garnissage. Cela a conduit à la substitution de produits ne convenant pas à une utilisation dans des constructions spécifiques et a entraîné des problèmes de perfor- mance coûteux. Le CNRC, ainsi que les intervenants de l’industrie, ont proposé l’élaboration d’une spécification standard harmonisée pour l’utilisation de panneaux de protection dans les toitures commerciales. Pour ce faire, il faut déterminer les caractéristiques nécessaires et élaborer un programme d’essai pour l’élaboration de la norme. Guidé par le GIEDSC, un consortium de participants de l’industrie s’est réuni pour mener à bien cette tâche. Au cours de plusieurs réunions, les participants ont présenté et discuté la sélection des paramètres d’essai pour les panneaux de garnissage, les interfaces et les composants, ainsi que les méthodes d’essai appropriées. The study, to be completed this fall, has already yielded some interesting results. Early indications are that concrete decks almost never dry out as they are subject to rewetting during their construction. The good news is that a robust, continuous vapour retarder free of defects can prevent moisture from entering the roofing assembly. In Canada, vapour barriers are mandated by building codes in almost all regions. However, the study affirms the needforcarewhenspecifyingandinstalling the vapour barrier onto a concrete deck. COVER BOARDS It is widely recognized that cover boards can enhance the performance of compact roof assemblies by providing a stable and robust bearing surface for the roof membrane while protecting the insulation below it. A wide variety of materials can be used as cover boards and each has its own unique performance characteristics. Unfortunately,thereiscurrentlynodefined set of criteria for cover boards. This has led to substitution of products not suitable for use in specific constructions and has resulted in costly performance problems. The NRC, along with industry stakeholders, has proposed the development of a harmonized standard specification for the use of protection boards in commercial roofing to include in the National Building Code of Canada. This requires the identification of the required characteristics and a test program for the development of the standard. Modelled on SIGDERS, a consortium of industry participants has come together to carry out this task. Over the course of several meetings, the selection of test parameters for cover board materials and component interfaces and appropriate test methods were presented and discussed.
