INNOVATION AWARD
MAXAN INTERIOR SYSTEMS | STUD BUILDER
Innovations like Maxan Interior Systems’
Stud Builder are showcasing the
sector’s ingenuity. The Stud Builder is
an automated system that replaces
manual stud-layout drafting with a
rules-driven, intelligence-based workflow.
“It effectively applies years of field
knowledge, engineering standards and
constructability rules into digital logic that
automatically generates stud layouts for
any wall condition,” explains Shif Zeri,
Maxan’s digital construction coordinator.
Maxan also integrates automated stud
layouts with HP SitePrint, linking digital
models directly to robotic on-site layout.
The result, adds Moses Gil, foreman, is
“greater accuracy, faster installation and
seamless execution from engineered
design to the field.”
The inspiration for the Stud Builder
came from recognizing a gap between
architectural design and real-world
wall framing. “While drawings contain
the information required to build a
wall, the translation from linework to
engineered framing still relies heavily
on manual drafting and interpretation,”
explains Doug Villeneuve, vice president
of construction. “Our objective was to
close that gap by transforming a simple
architectural wall centreline into a fully
engineered, buildable and data-driven
framing layout in seconds.”
Considerable time, research, technical
development and training went into its
creation, including incorporating real-
world experience and guidance from
industry professionals to ensure outputs
align with how walls are framed
in practice.
Looking ahead, the goal is to evolve the
Stud Builder into a full knowledge-based
framing engine that will “integrate deeper
detailing logic, richer data outputs and
fabrication-ready intelligence” to support
faster coordination, higher accuracy and
scalable implementation across projects.

Virgili has become an active
member of the board, helping
to organize YCL’s networking
events such as its boat
cruise, and philanthropic
initiatives like YCL’s
collaboration with the Pinball
Clemons Foundation, which
included jobsite tours with
aspiring students and a Blue
Jays game.
Still, he says, “While I really
enjoy helping to organize the
networking events, I think one
of my biggest unwritten roles
has been helping encourage
people [to] feel comfortable
at these events – to be
genuine, drop the corporate
veil, so that they can create
authentic relationships.”
Virgili is grateful to share his
insights and perspectives as
an entrepreneur. He extends
his gratitude toward his fellow
YCL committee members and
TCA for being leaders
in the industry and providing
a platform through which
young professionals like him
