office towers. “Together with 
my partners, we’ve had the 
opportunity to build some very 
unique projects,” Bernardi 
reflects. “We’re proud of the 
role we’ve played in building 
this city.”
Bernardi credits Structform’s 
legacy to strong relationships 
with developers such as 
Oxford Properties and Cadillac 
Fairview. “At Structform 
we’ve always tried to build 
strong relationships, not just 
buildings,” he says. “Our 
approach has always been to 
show up, do the work properly 
and treat people with respect.” 
Bernardi also attributes his 
personal success to industry 
peers and mentors like Paul 
Douglas of PCL and Geoff 
Smith of EllisDon, who he 
credits for being influential 
throughout his career.  
Receiving the Donald P. Giffin 
Sr. Award is an unexpected 
honour for Bernardi, 
who is quick to thank his 
Structform team and TCA for 
its recognition. With advice 
to young professionals 
making their own mark in 
construction, he adds, “Work 
hard and take care of your 
name – it matters more than 
you think. And along the way, 
enjoy the work. If you’re not 
having some fun doing it, 
you’re missing out on  
part of what makes this 
business special.”
Louis Bernardi is the latest 
industry leader to receive 
TCA’s Donald P. Giffin Sr. 
Award. And with over 50 years 
of construction leadership 
under his belt, his was a 
deserving name to be added 
to the association’s list.
Bernardi was hired by 
Structform’s founders in 
1971 as the company’s first 
estimator. His role expanded 
to pricing, negotiating and 
securing new work, until he 
eventually became CEO. Under 
his guidance, Structform has 
carved a respectable niche in 
complex commercial concrete 
forming. Its portfolio includes 
the Metro Toronto Convention 
Centre, Four Seasons Centre 
for the Performing Arts, 
Toronto Pearson International 
for the Construction, Infrastructure
and Real Estate Industries
