49 Issue 4 Winter Edition 2018 BUILD MANITOBA double-checking and some help from 3-D modelling. The visible vault has been a fascinating puzzle to solve. The project’s designers worked with a local glass and aluminum contractor to assemble these materials in a way that hasn’t yet been seen in Winnipeg.” Apart from the aesthetic of the design, the team had to grapple with the challenge of integrating the mechanical side of the new build with the existing gallery building without disrupting the day-to-day business of the latter. According to Tim Williams, Michael Maltzan Architecture’s Designing Principal for this project, the key to success is staging. “The new mechanical systems for the entire museum – both the WAG and the IAC – have already been installed. And they’ve been running for months, so really what we’re doing is building the gallery itself around it. The WAG system was due for an upgrade, and the whole system needed to be done in such a way as to be used for both buildings.” Michael Maltzan Architecture is in Los Angeles, but Cibinel Architecture in Winnipeg provided an important local design voice. “I think one of the exciting things for us on this project,” says Michael Robertson, Cibinel Partner in charge for the IAC project, “is that even though we’re not the design architects, there is still a really rewarding challenge in realizing a vision that is unique in the city. It lets us be challenged, and to develop skills and capabilities that we didn’t have before from the technical perspective.” Schmalz adds, “All in all, this build relies on careful planning to execute the one-of-a-kind design the architects and engineers have worked so hard to come up with.” For Williams, that enthusiasm by their Winnipeg partners to collaborate and problem-solve was a highlight of their involvement in the IAC project. “We’ve been working on the IAC for three years now (and a housing project across the street for about a year), and we’ve really enjoyed working with the construction industry in Winnipeg. It has been fantastic; we’ve come across some really fantastic subcontractors who have been really energetic and enthusiastic, and are real problem solvers with the engineering and architecture team. It’s such a great group of people (in Winnipeg), and we’ve really enjoyed working with the construction industry there.” Built in partnership with the Inuit, and with support from all three levels of government as well as private sector funding when completed, the WAG’s Inuit Art Centre will be the largest single gallery space in the world devoted to Inuit art, culture and history.
