42 BUILD MANITOBA winnipegconstruction.ca RISING TO THE CHALLENGE 300 Main comes to Winnipeg Square By Matthew Bradford Activity is ramping up at Winnipeg Square, where Artis REIT’s ambitious 300 Main residential tower is taking shape above the iconic “crossroads of Canada.” The residential tower is in development at the south pad of the Portage and Main site. Designed by Raymond SC Wan Architects, the 42-storey skyscraper is slated to be the largest of its kind in Winnipeg and install “amenity- rich urban living” accommodations next door to Winnipeg Square’s retail and entertainment offerings. Construction is being led by Marwest Construction, the same firm which oversaw the renovation of Artis REIT’s 360 Main headquarters on the same site. As of November 2018, construction of the building’s core had reached the second floor, following months of steel reinforcements and concrete installation. “Work has been ongoing for several months to install concrete jackets around several of the existing building columns to increase their capacity, as well as creating new door openings in the existing elevator and stair cores in the parkade levels,” says Susan Grieef, Principal with Crosier Kilgour & Partners Ltd., structural engineers for the project. According to Marwest Principal Armin Martens, work on the record-setting project has gone according to plan.
