34 BUILD MANITOBA winnipegconstruction.ca RICHARDSON CENTRE HEATING PLANT REPLACEMENT The 34-storey Richardson Centre, located at Winnipeg’s Portage Avenue and Main Street, was built in 1969 and housed two 500-horsepower Cleaver-Brooks steam boilers. In 2016, the original heating system was replaced with a condensing boiler plant with a cascading heating loop to enable the existing interconnected building systems to remain operational and provide energy-efficient heating. Manitoba Blue Cross started in a 1,000-square-foot space within this building back in the ‘60s. This building was completely gutted. So much of the interior had been lost over the years, but through photographic records and heritage research of international-style buildings, we reinstated much of what the original would have been. ” – Cindy Rodych The two-storey, 1960s building renewal at 599 Empress Street in Winnipeg stayed respectful to the original design, mixing elements of the building’s original style with contemporary accents. Construction and design included updating the building envelope and all building systems to meet and exceed sustainability and energy efficiency standards. “What I love about it was the motivation from the owners to do it. Those boilers that were 50 years old were maintained extremely well. They were in great shape and they didn’t need to get replaced.
