ADVANTAGE STEEL SPRING 2026 | 9
needed to design safe, economical and
sustainable structures.
The Education and Research Council
(ERC) plays a critical role in advancing
this objective. The ERC oversees a
broad portfolio of initiatives that directly
support
engineers
and
educators
across the Canadian steel construction
industry, including:
• Development
of
continuing
education and training programs
that help practicing engineers stay
current with codes, standards and
emerging design methodologies;
• Research funding that advances
innovation
in
steel
design,
fabrication and construction;
• Scholarships
and
competitions
that encourage engineering and
architecture students and young
professionals to pursue careers in
structural steel;
• Forums and resources for educators
to
ensure
alignment
between
academic instruction and evolving
industry needs; and
• Collaborative
initiatives
that
highlight
steel’s
versatility
and
promote
creative,
efficient
structural solutions.
The
ERC’s
work
is
focused
on
equipping engineers – both early career
and experienced – with the knowledge
and skills required to meet today’s
challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s
opportunities. Ongoing research and
innovation are essential as construction
methods continue to evolve, performance
expectations
increase
and
project
delivery models become more complex.
To support this, the ERC continues to
expand training offerings in critical areas
such as codes and standards, structural
design,
estimating,
inspection
and
quality assurance.
The ERC is grateful for the continued
support of the CISC and its funding
partners. Their commitment has enabled
meaningful
progress
in
education,
research and professional development
across the industry. Thank you!
But we need the help of the entire
industry and our members, as continued
engagement and growth of the reach of
our programs is essential to sustain this
momentum. By investing in the ERC,
supporters are directly contributing to the
development of the next generation of
engineers and to the long-term strength
and competitiveness of Canada’s steel
construction sector.
For fabricators and industry partners
who value technical excellence, innovation
and the enduring performance of well-
designed structures, the ERC represents a
tangible way to support the future of the
profession. Together, we can ensure that
steel remains a trusted, high-performance
solution for Canada’s infrastructure – well
positioned to meet both current demands
and future challenges. AS

CAST CONNEX
® Diablo Bolted Splice™
(DBS) is a cast steel fitting that enables
unobtrusive field bolted splices in circular
hollow structural section (HSS) members.
The DBS splice connectors are offered
with thin-gauge cover plates to conceal
the splice, or it may be left uncovered.
