12 | SPRING 2026 ADVANTAGE STEEL Tekla modelling was key to closing the geometric challenges within the project and providing a stable structure for the trades that followed. The main structural steel support structure weighed in at 723 tonnes and was the principal steel supporting the load for the architectural COR-TEN steel facade that envelops the buildings. Pioneer Village Station’s bold, futuristic design is among its distinguishing factors. Cylindrical in form, it features massive, sweeping steel canopies, supported by structural steel by Benson Steel and covered by COR-TEN weathering steel that create a striking impression for commuters, and shelter bus platforms beneath a sculptural envelope. “It’s one of the most architecturally assertive stops on Toronto’s subway network,” says Zelko Colakovich, president of Core Metal Inc., who remains as proud of the stop as he was seven years ago when his company played a key role in fabricating and supplying COR-TEN steel to make its unique vision a reality. “For us, it expertly reflects Canada’s commitment to 3D structural integrity and weathering steel design innovation.” A LANDMARK IN WEATHERING STEEL COR-TEN steel was chosen for both performance and aesthetics. While it looks like regular steel when first installed, this material begins to shift in colour, eventually deepening to a rich, stable dark brown within the first one to two years. “This surface weathering is intentional,” Mr. Colakovich explains. “This dense, stable patina protects the steel beneath from corrosion. After it gets to this point, the colour remains largely consistent, perhaps darkening slightly over decades. By about 40 years, the patina has fully stabilized.” Indeed, the buildings’ architectural geometry combined with this weathering steel facade gives the station its PIONEER VILLAGE STATION OPERATIONAL IN 2026 SMALL PARTS New line for HAMILTON PLANT CORBEC.COM Investing to support your galvanizing needs GRANDES STRUCTURES Des petites pièces aux Galvanisation Québec grandit pour mieux vous servir WWW.GALVANISATIONQUEBEC.COM DÈS 2026
