Nine Years Strong
Making a stop at Pioneer Village Station
A
t the nexus of Northwest Gate
and Steeles Avenue West sits one
of the most eye-catching stops
on Toronto’s subway network: Pioneer
Village Station. Located on Line 1 of the
Yonge-University extension, the hub is
both a vital piece of transit infrastructure
and a visually unique demonstration of
what steel can achieve.
Opened on Dec. 17, 2017, the station
was built as part of the Toronto-York
Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE). It was
designed by Will Alsop of aLL Design in
collaboration with Richard Stevens of IBI
Group and constructed by Walsh Group
for the Toronto Transit Commission.
The complex spans both sides of
Steeles Avenue. It consists of four
interconnected buildings: the Substation
Building and Northwest Entrance on
the north side, and the Bus Terminal

SETTLING ON A NAME
Originally known as Steeles West, Pioneer Village Station was renamed
during construction to represent the nearby Black Creek Pioneer Village
heritage site. In 2013, the name was shortened once more.
