and 
Southeast 
Entrance 
Building 
– 
all supported by base structural steel 
fabricated and installed by Benson – 
were fabricated and installed using 10-
mm COR-TEN steel plates, complete 
with pronounced fins and no visible 
mechanical fasteners. The interior design 
of the Northwest Entrance and the 
Southeast Entrance is done in COR-TEN 
perforated steel with 6.1-metre COR-TEN 
chandelier fixtures that emit light through 
small waterjet cut outs. Furthermore, the 
station’s interior features Benson’s angled 
structural columns supporting the platform 
levels below. These characteristics 
complement polished concrete walls and a 
40-light installation by Berlin-based studio, 
realities:united, which was installed by 
Core Metal.
STEEL IN STRUCTURE AND FORM
TTC’s Pioneer Village Station remains 
one of the most notable projects in 
both Benson Steel Limited’s and Core 
Metal Inc.’s portfolios. These two CISC 
member companies were responsible 
for fabricating and supplying 723 tons 
of structural steel, 1,000 tons of COR-
TEN steel and secondary steel for the 
buildings, and for working with the 
project team to achieve its ambitious 
design. “That was the biggest COR-TEN 
job we’ve ever done in Canada,” Mr. 
Colakovich reflects. “It really is so unique, 
and to this day I would say there’s nothing 
like it in the world.”
Perhaps the most technically complex 
element of the station was the Bus 
Terminal Building’s soffit panel system. 
The 600-square-metre cantilevered 
canopy extends over the bus platforms 
with 
its 
large 
structural 
trusses 
– 
fabricated by Benson – which give the 
illusion of weightlessness despite its 
imposing presence. To create the COR-
TEN canopy, Core Metal used advanced 
3D modelling software to map every 
detail before fabrication began. Then,
