Still, while the competition offered 
cash prizes, resume bumps and future 
opportunities, its organizers empha-
size that the real value of the Skills 
Competition lies in the experience itself. 
“It’s all about the experience; that’s what 
we really stress to program advisors and 
college leads,” said Brad Mavin, HVAC 
industry veteran and co-chair of HRAI’s 
Technical Skills Committee. “We don’t 
care if they win, and a lot of the students 
coming here know they probably won’t. 
That’s not the point. Every one of 
our judges and volunteers is from the 
industry, and most are employers. When 
a student puts themselves out there, it 
makes a difference. It shows initiative, 
a willingness to make mistakes and the 
confidence to try, and that stands out on 
a resume.”
Cependant, malgré les prix en argent, 
les atouts pour le CV et les occasions à 
venir, les organisateurs insistent : la vraie 
valeur du concours réside dans l’expé-
rience elle-même. « L’important, c’est 
l’expérience ; voilà ce que nous martelons 
aux conseillers du programme et aux 
responsables des collèges », a déclaré Brad 
Mavin, vétéran du CVCR et coprésident 
du Comité des compétences techniques 
de l’ICCRC. « On ne regarde pas qui 
gagne, et beaucoup d’étudiants le savent 
en arrivant. Nos juges et bénévoles, 
presque tous employeurs du secteur, 
cherchent autre chose. Quand un 
étudiant se lance, cela fait une différence : 
l’initiative, le courage d’essayer, la 
confiance de risquer l’erreur. Voilà ce qui 
se démarque sur un CV. »
L’accent porte sur la participation, non 
sur la perfection. Les concurrents n’ont
