Miles and Trapper say they’ve learned from Elders that the boreal (also known as woodland) and eastern migratory caribou can intermix, especially where boreal caribou integrate with the eastern migratory as they migrate northwest along the coasts. Trapper also said Elders have indicated that in past decades, caribou would cross the ice-covered James Bay as far north as Attawapiskat over to the Quebec side of the coast. Now, due to climate change, the bay does not completely freeze over. Trapper previously served as the Director of Lands and Resources for Moose Cree, and had taken part in advisory and consultation meetings related to the De Beers Victor Mine near Attawapiskat First Nation, and Detour Gold, in which Moose Cree has a part- nership. She recalled how each company, as part of their environmental assessment requirements, had planned to study and monitor caribou populations near their respective sites.
