INDIGENOUS TECH in Ontario speak. The Mohawk app teaches people words like kanenna’kè:ne (fall), teioterihwakhashiónkwas (sharing), wakhskaré:wake (I am a member of the Bear Clan) and Onón:takon (Hamilton). Words are divided into categories such as greetings, feelings, clans, places and seasons. The app will read the phrase, and users can speak it back and test their knowledge. At the time of the launch, Tom Deer, who teaches Mohawk and Cayuga at SNP, told CBC News, “These languages are who we are. It’s the identity of this land. For years, our languages have been relegated and marginalized… This is one way for our languages to take their place in the world.” To download the app, go to itunes.apple.com and search Speak Mohawk. Challenge4Change Challenge4Change is another language app developed recently by Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation, with the help of leading tech company Synergiq Solutions. The free action-based app teaches its users common words and phrases in Anishinaabemowin and allows the user to exchange common words and phrases with friends, neigh- bours and colleagues in a friendly competition. Users can learn, and then see how their highest score ranks alongside others in the language competition. “Not everybody has a grandmother or a grandfather now that speaks the language; they may have a neighbour but they’re not necessarily accessible,” said Chief Peltier. “We think it’s an opportune time to have this developed and completed and be available for widespread use for the languages.” Challenge4Change is part of an ongoing campaign, and will be followed by a school program in March of 2019 to coincide with National Indigenous Languages Month. Then it will expand to other Indigenous languages and to a broader umbrella program that will cover other key initia- tives, including youth empowerment, economic develop- ment, governance, health and wellness. “We’ve started the work but need your help to reach our goals,” said Chief Peltier. As of September 2018, over $500,000 was raised, edging closer to the goal of $600,000. See https://secure.qgiv.com/event/challenge4change/ to take part. More Than Just a Concrete Floor!
