L ocal 793 of the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO) are proud to be part- ners with leaders of First Nations communities. Local 793 and the OETIO have been building relation- ships with First Nations communities across the province for many years. We are encouraging individuals from First Nations com- munities to consider a career as a tower or mobile crane, heavy equipment, or concrete pump operator. In 2016, we signed a Statement of Partnership with the Chiefs of Ontario and agreed to work collaboratively to help First Nations people enroll in our apprentice programs so they can pursue good-paying careers as crane, heavy equip- ment and concrete pump operators. Skilled crane and heavy equipment operators will be needed in future and we believe that First Nations people should have an opportunity to fill those jobs. We recognize the constitutionally protected treaty rights of First Nations communities and believe that Aboriginal people have a critical role to play in making sustainable development a reality in Canada. Local 793 and the OETIO have developed an Aboriginal Working Together Engagement Plan and one of the goals is to recruit 50 new Aboriginal apprentices in 2018. We are eager to help people from First Nations communi- ties acquire the skills needed to become crane and heavy equipment operators in the construction industry. Since 2005, more than 690 Aboriginal people have been trained at the OETIO. We encourage individuals from First Nations communi- ties to get in touch with us if they want to embark on a career in construction. Tower and mobile crane and concrete pump operators are trained at the OETIO campus in Oakville while dozer, excavator, tractor-loader-backhoe and grader operators are trained at the campus in Morrisburg. To become an operator, recruits must have a Grade 12 certificate and a valid drivers licence. Recruits must also have a good attitude and pass a trade entrance exam. The OETIO is a world-class facility that has been in opera- tion since 1982. It has the latest equipment and technological aids and the courses are taught by experienced instructors. Local 793, meanwhile, was founded in 1919 and represents nearly 15,000 unionized crane and heavy equipment opera- tors across Ontario and the Territory of Nunavut. to build a better future OPERATING ENGINEERS TRAINING INSTITUTE OF ONTARIO Local 793 2245 Speers Road Oakville, ON, L6L 6X8 1-877-793-4863 www.iuoelocal793.org OETIO 12580 County Road #2 Morrisburg, ON, K0C 1X0 1-877-543-3549 www.oetio.com
