27 Issue 4 Winter Edition 2017 UPWORD Photograph, Andrew Sikorsky Training standards are at the core of what we do and at the forefront of our initiatives for 2017. The Westman Safety Conference took place on April 11 & 12, 2017, which provided over 120 attendees with occupational safety and health education and training designed for all industries – covering subjects such as safety culture, musculoskeletal injuries and prevention of young worker injuries. Meanwhile, our collaborative initiative for setting a standard throughout Working at Heights training programs and providers in Manitoba is finally coming to fruition. After two years of developing a series of documentation that encompasses and structures standardized working at heights training programs and providers, we’re ready to introduce the program to the construction industry and implement the working at heights training standard as a “best practice” in Manitoba. CSAM will be recognized as the “gate keeper” of the voluntary training standard under the expectation that SAFE Work Manitoba will take over the implementation and quality assurance of all training standards in due course. And lastly, I’m pleased to say that our Divisional Committees’ questions surrounding environmental safety have been answered: we have developed a new one-day course, called Environmental Safety in Construction, which encompasses growing topics and solutions for the construction industry. To see upcoming training dates for this and other courses, visit constructionsafety.ca. Thank you to our member companies for your ongoing support as we continue to strengthen the safety culture, with education and training, in Manitoba’s construction industry. Have a safe summer!
