EDUCATION ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS ONCE QUOTED AS SAYING, “GIVE ME SIX HOURS TO CHOP DOWN A tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” To Lincoln, the idea of being prepared for a task, with the right tools at hand, was inherently more valuable than tackling the task itself. Following this great leader’s example, The Construction Institute of Canada (TCIC), the education arm of TCA, spent the better part of 2017 getting ready for the technology and education revolution that lies ahead. We all hear the rhetoric that technology is changing the way we live, work and play at an alarming rate, and generally that is true. In North America and most developed countries it is undeniably the case. Some industry and business leaders are measuring this rapid pace of change, while others are not. There are those who are forging onward through pure instinct. They are the ones who keep saying “It’s just not like it used to be.” In other words, while they feel the sea of change, it is not quantifiable to them. TCA member companies rely on us as an association to take a leadership role and to assist them in navigating the construc- tion business. These companies are all feeling the effect of rapid change. Some are feeling it in quantifiable ways, through metrics, while others are feeling it purely through instinct. But all have noted that industry expectations are higher and coming from all directions as businesses look for faster, more robust communication, higher performance, and lower costs. As a result, TCIC has revolutionized the way we present our continuous professional development (CPD) offerings. We have taken a hard look at why construction professionals need continuous training, divided up the interests of all our stake- holders, and re-aligned our course offerings. NEWOFFERINGS Most notably, we have introduced new courses into our PATHWAYS learning program. The courses have been arranged into three different levels: Level 100 for broad or general knowledge, Level 200 to build on the ideas of the previous level without necessarily being prerequisites, and Level 300 designed to give participants fully deployable outcomes in their organization the next business day.
