Buffalo Dance Ceremony – The Buffalo Dance Ceremony was held on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The Buffalo Dance Ceremony is held to promote love, wellness, forgiveness, cultural identity, for suicide prevention and bringing people together. Night Lodges – Two Night Lodges were held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Thursday, Aug. 14. Night lodges are held to help people find direction in their lives and to honour the people that have gone on before us. Community Meals and Feasts Feasts and shared community meals nourished both body and spirit, reinforcing kinship and generosity. Meals became moments of connection, reminding us that food is medicine and that gathering at the table strengthens unity. Guests and relatives from across Indigenous country were welcomed, uplifted and honoured. Presenters, Entertainment and On-Site Sessions This gathering showcased the hard work and dedication of our people, from organizing logistics, preparing meals and supporting ceremonies, to welcoming guests and showcasing a variety of presenters that offered educational sessions, entertainment and motivation to attendees of all ages. Attendees were given the opportunity to attend workshops led by Elders, health professionals and Knowledge Keepers. Guest Speakers / Entertainment Devon Napope – A member of One Arrow First Nation, Sask., Devon is a recovered ex-gang member who dealt with addictions and time in prison. He now works with Str8Up and helps others leave gang lifestyles and begin their healing journey. Emery Burningrass – From Onion Lake Cree Nation, Emery has been a YouTube and social media star for the past five years, particularly among Indigenous communities. Errol Kinistino – From the Ochapowace First Nation, Errol works as an actor, drama instructor, director, writer and singer. He is best known for his role as Leon Deela in the CBC television series North of 60. Kishaun Gervais – A professional hockey player from Keeseekoose First Nation, Kishaun currently plays in the ECHL and wants to prove to Indigenous youth that they can do the same. Nova Fox – An Indigenous content creator from Ochapowace First Nation, Nova makes content to promote a healthy way of living and Cree language revitalization. Terri-Anne Strongarm – A Canadian singer from Star Blanket Cree Nation and well-established entertainer, Terri- Anne is known as “the little girl with the big voice” who wins over fans with an engaging stage presence and incred- ible vocal range. Brandon Alexson – A member of Kahkewistahaw First Nation, Sask., Brandon started singing at 16 years old and continued to sing throughout the years. He first hit the stage in 2019, performing country song covers and country favourites. On-site Sessions Traditional Parenting – Eileen Thomas shared her knowledge on how to effectively parent children in a culturally traditional manner. Traditional Teachings – Jacki Bellegarde and Margaret Bear shared their knowledge on topics including death, grief, loss and how to deal with it, residential schools and their lived experiences. Participants of these sessions were given the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance. Oskâpêwis Training – Doug Joseph shared his knowledge on what to expect when becoming an oskâpêwis (an Elder’s helper). Men’s Protocol & History – Charles Pratt, an Elder from Ochapowace Nation, shared the importance of knowing where you come from, knowing who you are and how important it is that we protect the Earth Mother.
