Early considerations included establishing regular communications processes with the different communi- ties and stakeholders so everyone would be aware of upcoming work and know where to ask for more information. Project communications now include community liaison committees in each neighbourhood, semi-annual open houses, regular stakeholder briefings, a project website, electronic and printed newsletter, advertising and the use of various social media channels. Tokeepcyclists,pedestriansanddrivers safe throughout construction, CTC, Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario started running a safety campaign along Eglinton Avenue in early fall 2018. The campaign includes advertising, social media outreach, radio messages, on-street activations and site signage. All traffic changes are advertised and communicated through notices that are mailed to affected areas, as well as through the Internet. “Together with Metrolinx, we use a dedicated website (thecrosstown.ca) and social media to communicate changes on the ground, with the addition of site maps and videos to help cyclists, pedestrians and drivers navigate through the construction safely,” Pytel reports. “In addition, the teams work with municipal and community stakeholders to distribute the informa- tion to their audiences.” Early in the project, CRT also launched the Crosstown app, which delivers real- time traffic and transit information to help cyclists, pedestrians and drivers plan their trips along Eglinton. To date, it has been downloaded over 3,000 times. BUILDINGCONSIDERATIONS On the construction front, the greatest challenge has been building the new transit system on a busy corridor that runs right through the heart of Toronto.
