Now that the dust has settled, it remains to be seen just how effi- ciently this streamlined City Council will function. What is clear, however, is that councillors will be stretched much more thinly. The benefit, according to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who spearheaded the controversial move, will be $25 million saved. This includes $9.8 million for 22 councillors’ salaries ($111,955 annually over four years) and possibly an additional $15 million in expenses and staff salaries. Only time will tell how these gains and losses will balance out. |BD TORONTO ELECTION 2018 THERETURNOFJOHNTORY THE RE-ELECTED MAYOR CHAMPIONS SMARTTRACK, AFFORDABLE HOUSING Returning Mayor John Tory’s overall priorities have by now become familiar to Torontonians. One of his highest-profile projects has been the SmartTrack transit expansion. Although diminished from its original conception, it is still expected to bring at least six new stations to existing GO Transit lines between Finch-Kennedy and St. Clair-Old Weston. During the election campaign, Tory committed to building 40,000 affordable rental units over 12 years and to creating affordable-housing development plans alongside major infrastructure projects. He also pledged to limit property tax increases to the infla- tion rate, partly in order to assist new home buyers. Builders' Digest Quarter 3 2018 | 17
