CONSTRUCTION PRIORITIES: COMMITTING TO TECHNOLOGY
difficult for companies that are trying
to keep their businesses thriving amid
persistent challenges.
“Construction continues to face many
of the same challenges it has faced
for years, including labour shortages,
productivity pressures, project complexity
and growing client expectations,”
Casaletto says. “Technology is not the
answer to everything, but it can absolutely
be part of the solution.”
The committee also reflects a broader
commitment by TCA to evolve alongside
its membership and provide support
where it is needed most. While
construction companies have long
excelled at solving problems and adapting
to challenges, Canadian stakeholders
have historically been reluctant to do so
through new technologies.
“We have been an industry that is fairly
characterized as slow to evolve when it
comes to technology,” Mollenhauer says,
emphasizing that the industry’s resiliency
and growth are increasingly dependent
on an ability to embrace innovation.
Herein, he adds, the committee will also
work to generate interest and awareness
for the latest technologies and promote
their uptake throughout the various
construction sectors.
“Technologies like AI are vitally important
investments that employers have to
make, especially at a time when we’re all
being challenged to find innovative new
ways to improve productivity, be more
competitive and solve the extraordinary
number of challenges that we have in
our projects,” Mollenhauer says. “Our
members’ needs are changing. We need
to be progressive and look for new ways to
help and support our members, and one
of the ways we’re doing that is through
this new committee.”
Overall, says Casaletto, by bringing
together industry expertise, practical
experience and technology insight, TCA’s
Technology Committee is meant to help
contractors navigate one of the most
significant transformations the industry
has ever faced. “At the end of the day, I
want the committee to produce things
that members can actually use, including
research, case studies, benchmarking,
educational content and practical
guidance that helps organizations make
decisions that actually benefit their
business and their clients.” ◄
