8 l ROOFINGBC l FALL 2018 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE longevity of the company, as they have a vested interest in the success of the business. However, I saw these same qualities in other staff members as well. From secretaries, estimators, admin- istration, management and to the workers out in the field, all of them demonstrated a dedication not only to the company’s sustainability, but its growth as well. I truly got a sense that people felt ownership in their job roles, which is certainly a dream for every employer. Many of the employees had been working with their company for at least 10 years, and several had been employed for 20, 30 and even longer. This is a sign that the companies value their employees and the employees value their companies. I myself am very fortunate to have an outstanding team that keeps my business running while I am away. How else could I have the freedom to take two weeks off in the early summer to travel throughout the province to meet other contractors? Everything I learned on this journey was punctuated by my last stop in Prince Rupert, prior to boarding the ferry back home. My last tour date led me to long-time friend and work colleague, Tony Caputo of Eby Construction.Tony has been in this industry for many years. A tireless promotor of the RCABC, he has served on numerous association committees as well as the executive board. To me, Tony exemplifies all of the aspects I mention in this column and more. From all of the wonderful people I met, to the beautiful places I visited, to the knowledge I gained, I can honestly say this road trip was definitely time well spent. What I know, without a doubt, is that we have one beautiful province which is covered from the Yukon to Washington and Alberta to the Pacific Ocean by contractors who are committed to quality, safety and integrity. All of our members are supported by the excellent staff at the RCABC, the consultant community as well as the suppliers. Who knows? In the future I may just carry on where I left off, so keep the coffee warm! In the meantime, if any of my colleagues are ever on the island, please program your GPS for 3132 Grant Rd., Cumberland, B.C. Our door is always open.
