The two men just recently completed their first year of a three-year apprenticeship in the Architectural Sheet Metal trade. “We attended an information session about the roofing industry and decided to give it a try,” says Ahmad. “RCABC provided all of the training we needed to find good jobs and VIRCS continues to support us in our daily lives.” That lifeline has been essential. Jawad is married with four children— two girls, ages four and nine, and two boys ages two and eight. His youngest was born in Canada. Jawad arrived with some construction experience, having worked as an ironworker in Daraa, Syria. Ahmad is also married and has two children—a three-year-old daughter and a son, 17 months. Ahmad arrived with no construction experience, but was fully equipped with an essential ingredient—the willingness to learn. He says, “Since being relo- cated, I’ve worked in restaurants, the landscaping business, and as a cleaning contractor—often working 100 hours a week. But thanks to RCABC and the graciousness of Parker Johnston Industries, both Jawad and I are now employed as roofing workers full time.” The two Syrians have worked for the local roofing company since January 2017. Culture shock As would be expected, there has been some culture shock for the two men— adjusting to Canadian mores, culture and especially language. It’s also safe to say that both of the men and their fami- lies have learned an essential virtue— patience. “We’ve had to become very patient through this period of adjust- ment,” says Jawad, “not only with our new culture but with ourselves and our own expectations.” Ahmad adds, “Learning English has been the hardest thing for me personally but I’m really learning best by working.”
