He says the company is poised and ready to support them in all of their needs. 101 Industries has experience taking on huge jobs. In recent years, the company worked on the Rio Tinto Alcan smelter modernization project. (This is the same smelter that drew Willie Meier to north- west B.C. in the first place.) 101 Industries worked on the project from 2012 to 2016 and did roofing, heating, ventilation, plumbing and structural steel work. The company, which normally employs about 60 people, had to ramp up to more than 120 because of the modernization project. Meier says this was one of his favourite projects to work on. “When it’s all under one umbrella, one managerial group, we were able to coalesce all the different trade groups and they worked together so well,” he says. “We never had any trade or juris- dictional issues and everybody supported each other to the best of their capacity. To me, that really showed a tremendous team-building effort.” Meier says the project was exhila- rating to work on, but also exhausting and meant a lot of time spent away from home. Making things more complicated is that 101 Industries took this project on in addition to its usual work as it didn’t want to leave its existing clients in a lurch. “We fought through it. We retained those clients and customers, and once the project was complete, we may have even gotten a few new ones because of the project,” says Meier. He credits the company’s success and growth to a few things. “It’s very important that we recognize that it’s our people who make us who we are and continue to give us that drive to get up every morning… we have a lot of long- term employees as well,” he says. Some employees have been with the company for as long as 20 years, while some recent retirees had put in 25 years. As a company based in a small town, offering diverse services has helped its growth. As well, the company prides itself on understanding what its clients are looking for and the quality of its craftsmanship. Meier says the company is selective about the projects it works on. For example, as a roofing contractor, 101 Industries focuses on smaller, specialty projects that are more complicated, rather than just trying to work on large projects. 101 Industries joined the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia (RCABC) about 10 years ago and says it has opened up opportunities for the company. “We recognized the RCABC as an industry leader, an organi- zation that sets the standard,” says Meier. “As a complement to our own high stan- dards, we felt that becoming a member was critically important to showcase not only our abilities, but also to be able to engage in their guarantee program and offer our clients the best possible warran- ties and industry oversight.”
