www.ecao.org 22 A HEALTH & SAFETY AWARENESS Arc Flash and Electrical Safety Training By Jim Pollard All electrical workers must be retrained on the latest 2018 edition of the CSA Z462 Standard on workplace electrical safety. Retraining is not the same as refresher training. Full retraining is required because the CSA Z462 Standard was published in 2018 with significant changes and updates. Adequate retraining that includes all of the necessary requirements for compliance must be equivalent to at least one (1) full day of classroom instruction. Acceptable Training Formats A classroom can be either physical or virtual.The CSA Z462 Standard requires that training shall be classroom or on-the-job, or both.The most effective training format uses multiple types of education in a blended learning model. All across Canada, workers are benefiting from the use of electrical safety eLearning as a prerequisite before any on-the-job or Instructor-led training sessions. Regardless of what training format you choose, workers shall be trained on their specific work tasks and observed to document and validate their electrical safety competency. ECAO Training Solutions The ECAO has recently launched an online training program called the Electrical Safety Training System (ESTS). Developed by Danatec, there are ESTS courses for both Qualified Electrical Workers and Non-Electrical Workers. ECAO Members save up to 40 per cent off retail pricing and can access the ESTS eLearning courses from the Safety Links within the Members Area of the ECAO website.The ESTS eLearning has also been adopted by contractors associations in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick.
