Was there a unifying goal for the day? “To make maximum positive impact in our communities in one day,” said Chris Hill, Executive Vice President. “We want to come out of this knowing we’ve made a difference in the communities where we live and work.” Reactions to the idea from union partners was positive, with the IBEW and UA both agreeing to promote the idea to members. Participation was also open to friends and family. “At Modern Niagara, we are a values-driven company. Giving back to our communities is a great way to live our core values of teamwork, initiative, determination, professionalism, and passion,” said Hill. The process of selecting the Community Day charities included all staff and contractors, who were able to nominate charities to be the recipients of volunteer time. Once the charities passed a vetting process (which included agreeing to participate), the final shortlist was determined by a second vote. Once the final list was made available, everyone could sign up for a charity of choice. Hill commented, “We want to respect what people would like to do, and try to provide options geographically, so we don’t have any barriers caused by travel time.” Community Day took place in all Modern Niagara locations across the country: Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton,Toronto, Kingston, and Ottawa. In the Ontario locations, the following organizations benefited: Toronto • Albion Neighbourhood Services (Etobicoke) • Boys & Girls Club of East Scarborough • Daily Bread Food Bank (Etobicoke) • Food for Life (Burlington) • Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Barrie) • Pegasus Animal Sanctuary (Port Perry) • Sunshine Garden at CAMH • The Riverwood Conservancy (Mississauga) Ottawa • Girl Guide Camp Clean-Up • Orleans Community Garden • Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice (Kanata) • Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health Kingston • Salvation Army To see highlights from Modern Niagara’s Community Day, visit PoweringCommunities.ca
