To take this further, it looks great on the surface to implement full hockey gear on the jobsite. A full-cage helmet with face shield will prevent head, face and eye injuries. Shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin pads and gloves will eliminate all trip and fall injuries, even from a low height. Full gear will get us so close to our goals of zero claims – or will it? Or will it drive away our workforce? Or will it cause other issues? I heard an exec say, “Whatever it takes to bring claims to zero.” I would say, this is construction, this is the real world, and we need to take a step back, look at the situation rationally, logically and in prac- tice. Is it worth implementing? There is a balance in everything in life – too much of a good thing eventually comes full circle and can become the very thing that causes the issue they were trying to eliminate. We as an industry can still improve, but we are very close to the minimum levels of accidents/injuries possible without over-regulation and bubble-wrapping. If the current rules, regulations, standards, etc. are being met, the likelihood of acci- dents/injuries are minimal and close to the balance of acceptable risk. The real world cannot legislate or regulate the human factor out, no matter how hard they try. If new problems are showing up, it’s likely not an equipment issue, and if the equipment is sufficient, what has changed? The answer may be who as well as what. Address the root cause, not the symptoms. As I stated in my first article, we must remember what brought us here, then use it to adapt to the changes when necessary. Progress for the sake of progress is often not truly progres- sive. Learn from the past and come up with solutions that truly make sense. We must ensure we are not on the path of building the perfect fish that can’t swim.
