b'The Final RehabNORTH DUMFRIES PITNorth Dumfries, Ontario In the North Dumfries Township, under the stewardship of Cambridge Aggregates/Heidelberg Materials, lies the North Dumfries Pit, a recipient of the coveted 2022 OSSGA Judges Choice Award in Progressive Rehabilitation. The rehabilitation approach for the North Dumfries Pit was twofold: first, to restore the 54-hectare pit floor to its former agricultural vitality, and second, to transform the remaining 18.1 hectares of extraction area into a natural haven, boasting diverse ecological communities including Oak Savannah, Woodland, Prairie and native grasslands. Commencing its journey in 2017, this ambitious progressive rehabilitation unfolded across four distinct phases.At last check the team had rehabilitated 12.5 hectares of the pit floor into a thriving agricultural land, now nurturing corn and various cash crops in abundance. In Phase 4 of their rehabilitation plans, three hectares were planted in 2022, including the meticulous grading of the setback area.
