b'The Final RehabWAYNCO AGGREGATES PIT #3The winner of 2016 OSSGA Environmental Achievement Award was Waynco Aggregates Pit #3, for its success in creating a massive prairie on its site. In 2005, Waynco Ltd. was approached by the Waterloo Stewardship Network with a request to become a partner in enhancing, restoring and creating one of Ontarios largest prairie remnants from the tallgrass prairies and savannahs on its property. Soon after, a plan to regrow a Waynco Prairie was launched with a goal to protect and enhance the endangered tallgrass ecosystem and its native plant and animal species. The Waynco Rehabilitation Project at Waynco Aggregates Pit #3 has helped to preserve and expand the habitats of declining populations of endangered species in prairie and savannah habitats. Through partnerships with community organizations and by implementing measures such as prescribed burns, extensive invasive species management, seed collection, and planting, Waynco Aggregates has succeeded in enhancing and restoring a prominent prairie remnant. The site hosts tours for naturalist groups and is a focus of study for students at the University of Waterloo. Seeds collected from the project have contributed to the restoration of other prairie lands, including a project at the nearby Savannah Golf Links.OSSGAs Environmental Achievement Award recognizes the efforts of operators who proactively and successfully developed and implemented industry-leading polices, programs or projects that protect and/or improve the environment.
