Ontario Electrical Contractor 7 Red Seal Commitment • Ontario’s new apprenticeship system should focus on real economic value by basing all competency standards, all training standards, all scopes of practice and all Certificates of Qualification on the Red Seal standards. Enforcement • Ontario’s former apprenticeship system lacked adequate enforcement mechanisms. We want to assist this government in getting the system right. Industry Leadership • ECAO, with our labour partners of the IBEW/CCO and our industry partners at OEL are the most suited to assist by bringing industry perspective and needs. Together we represent the entire legitimate electrical construction industry in the Province of Ontario. We ask you to continue to reinforce these messages when you meet with your local members of parliament. … we all knew that a budget bill was due to be introduced this spring, as is the norm in Ontario. What I didn’t expect was that legislative change directly impacting the construction industry would come through the budget. Nashville is nearly sold out! We were confident that we had planned a terrific 2019 Conference for our industry, and the reaction has confirmed that our confidence was not misplaced. Happening September 25-29, your response this far in advance is unprecedented. If you are still considering attending the 2019 Conference and haven’t yet registered, I strongly urge you to do so immediately. Our industry has been involved in consultations and has been hearing about the new Construction Act and Prompt Payment for longer than I have occupied the Presidency of ECAO. One piece of this is the new arbitration scheme for construction disputes, scheduled to be implemented on October 1 this year. I am pleased that ECAO is providing practical advice to our members on the new scheme in addition to keeping you abreast of developments. The article authored by Dan Leduc (page 20) was also sent through our electronic newsletter, and we will have a panel of experts presenting on the topics he covers, at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Niagara Falls in October. So, along with the regular business of the AGM, the joint JEPP AGM, the Great Gatsby-themed evening, and our new educational sessions; the 2019 AGM is an event not to be missed. Until I see you at the Conference in Nashville and AGM in Niagara Falls, I wish you a tremendous summer of profitability, success, and memories made with your family and friends.
