b'S ince the City of Vancouvers Zero Emissions Building Plan and B.C.s Energy Step Code came into effect, companies around the Province have stepped into a leadership role, boldly adopting the stringent net-zero energy-ready or near-zero emission targets. Supported by incentives, leadership dialogues, tours and training through organi-zations like Passive House Canada, BCIT and Zero Emissions Building Exchange (ZEBx), voluntary adoption of Passive House certified projects increased from one certified home in 2015 to over 2,200 residential units (2.3 million square feet) and five non-residential buildings to date in the City of Vancouver (the City) alone. Coupled with the 2,000 addi-tional units (1.8 million square feet) of Passive House development with permit inquiries in the City, it is clear the future of B.C. building is well on its way to zero emissions. All of this activity is taking place within a jurisdiction with less than 700,000 residents. In fact, large uptake from industry continues to drive Passive House and Step 4 as the mainstream building practice in the City and across the Province. So much so that in June 2019, the City could confidently justify new energy efficiency regulation for codes due to the massive conversion rate across industry. This new regulation will directly reduce GHG emissions from new multi-family and commercial buildings by more than 70 per cent. Meanwhile, looking only a few months ahead at December 2019, The Province anticipates major urban centres representing 55 per cent to 70 per cent of new building permits in B.C. will have adopted the Step Code, many of which are bypassing Step 1 and even referencing Step 3 for either base code compliance or rezoning developments. Another exciting step towards the decar-bonization of B.C. buildings occurred on April 29, when Council approved the Citys Climate Emergency Response recommenda-tions, recommending new and replacement heating and hot water systems to use onlyReady, Set .
