b'BCBEC Elements: What drew you to Sense Engineering?Nichole Brackett:It was really the opportunity to continue to workwith people I respected and that I loved working with and was able to learn from.Before working at Sense Engineering, I was at another building envelope consulting company called Halsall Associates. Two of the principals in that office left and later started up Sense Engineering. I joined them here and Ive been working with the same group of people for 12 years now. Its interestingI think this is almost the softer side of engineering. Its less calculations and more structural analysis. A lot of it is more open-ended; there isnt necessarily a single right answer. You have to get a good look and feel for what youre working on and what the client is hoping to get from it, make judgement calls and figure out the best solutions that way.BE: Which of the projects thatyouve worked on have you found most interesting?NB:We do everything from building envelope restoration work to new construction as well, where [Sense Engineering] gets hired by architects or developers to review and assist with building envelope design. So that work is neat because youre taking the lessons youve learned from restoration work, and then youre trying to steer the design of new buildings so they dont have the same issues that have happened before.Its kind of neat to be able to apply what youve learned from the old buildings and then try and help make the new buildings better.Even on the restoring buildings front, its our key mandate here at Sense Engineering to provide clientcentric services. We really focus on what our clients are trying to get out of the project. So rather than saying this component is deteriorating or leaking, it needs to be replaced, we take this approach of, can it be repaired? What are the options?
