Be patient. Its all connected, and CSA A123.51 hasFigure 8something to say about that, too.Remember Article 9.26.5.1.? It states very clearly in Sentence (2) that eave protectionisnotrequiredwhenany of the subsequent conditions are met. The language in CSA A123.51 is more cautious,requiringeaveprotection where the potential for leakage into the interiorofheatedstructuresfromice damming exists. (Figure 9).The key word is potential, which I have underlined.WhereasArticle9.26.5.1.makesan unequivocal statement about when eave protection is not required, the CSA stan-dardrequiresthatthereaderconsider the potential for ice damming. That meansthatevenifabuildingissitu-ated in a region historically known for its moderate climate, the potential for ice dammingmustbeconsidered,andif that potential is real, then it really doesnt matterthatArticle9.26.5.1.sayseave protection isnt required. Just remember thelastthreewintersonBritish Columbiassouthcoastprolonged sub-zerotemperatures,theconsider-able accumulation of snow and freeze/thaw cyclingand then think about that word potential.Let me offer some final words about the CSA standard and eave protection.
