b'The Final RehabSMITH PIT Caledon, OntarioLocated in the town of Caledon, on the northern flank of the Caledon Outwash, lies Lafarges Smith Pit. The material on the property (a result of glacial melting) was used to produce asphalt for road paving, sand for concrete, and granular products for road base constructionall of which supported road and construction projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area for over 70 years. Progressive rehabilitation at the 36.6-hectare Smith Pit has been actively ongoing for over 20 years since it was acquired by Lafarge. Over the span of 2018 - 2023, Lafarge moved approximately 110,500 cubic metres of overburden and topsoil, including Table 1 excess topsoil from nearby projects. The side slopes around the perimeter of the pit were sloped and graded to a minimum of 3:1 and hydroseeded with a mixture of water, high quality grass seed, fertilizer and mulch to protect the seed and keep it moist during the germination process. The site, which was successfully surrendered in October 2023, now hosts a 17.8-hectare lake with shorelines that have naturalized with shrubs and small trees. The former pit is now a natural wooded and grassland area for wildlife, earning it a 2023 Progressive Rehabilitation Award from OSSGA.
