HoodTorontos historic Stone Distillery has stood the test of time andPhotos: Thane Lucasremains an iconic landmark in the cityO fallTorontosstonestructures,noneis more impressive than the Stone Distillery, formercentreofoperationsfordistillers GooderhamandWorts.Ahugelypros-perousconcernthatdidnotcompletely cease operation until 1987, the business was founded in 1832 at what is now known as the Distillery Historic District by brothers-in-law William Gooderham and James Worts.Distilling operations commenced in 1837, and business expanded over time. The Stone Distillery was constructed between 1859 and 1861, and at 800 by 30 feet and five storeys high, it dwarfed most other buildings of the day. The structure itself and its internal works were designed by architect and civil engineer David Roberts, Sr., who had special expertise in steam-powered mills and worked forGooderhamandWortsoverthecourseofabout 20years.16 AVENUESWINTER 2021'
